Best Shampoo for Oily Hair – Phyto’s Phytocedrat Sebum-Regulating Shampoo Review

When sourcing for the best shampoo possible to treat your oily greasy hair and scalp condition, always look for one that has as many natural ingredients as possible. Another important requirement is that the pH (or acidity/alkalinity) should match that of your natural scalp pH (between 5 and 6) in order to avoid problems such as dandruff and/or fungus (if the pH is too alkaline) or an excessively dry scalp (if the pH is too acidic).

I was first introduced to Phyto’s Phytocedrat Sebum-Regulating shampoo for oily hair about 4 years ago at a salon after a hairdresser commented that my scalp was really oily. Phytocedrat became my No. 1 shampoo for oily scalp and hair ever since! Phytocedrat is arguably the BEST shampoo for oily hair. I love it for its herbal ingredients and effectiveness in refreshing my scalp. What’s best is the shampoo’s ideal pH level for a healthy scalp- as my own pH test reveals.

Match the color on the pH strip to the color chart that comes with the pH strips. Phytocedrat has an ideal pH between 5 and 6!

Here’s a quick look at the shampoo’s description:

This antiseptic shampoo regulates the scalp and prevents the spread of oil, providing ultra-oil absorbing benefits. The botanical active ingredients used in Phyto PhytoCedrat Shampoo for oily hair (essential oil of citron, tormentil, geranium, nettle, rosemary and sage) regulate the sebaceous glands and decrease sebum secretion. The scalp is perfectly clean and the hair feels lighter and is beautifully shiny. Helps prevent the rebound effect. May be used on both natural and colour-treated hair.

Active Ingredients – Essentials Oil of Lemon – Geranium Extract – Extraction from 9 Plants (48%, including citron, tormentil, geranium, nettle, rosemary and sage)

Best of all, Phytocedrat is Silicone and Paraben Free. Paraben is a type of anti-bacterial and anti-fungal preservative that has been linked to breast cancer.

My product- and money-saving guide to using the shampoo

Phytocedrat is really runny. I’ve read a lot of complaints on how easy it is to pour out too much of the shampoo onto our palm. The trick is to pour the shampoo into the bottle cap, so you can see exactly how much you are pouring. Here are my 6 easy steps to shampooing with Phytocedrat.

1) Wet your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water. The more thoroughly you wet your hair, the easier it will be to spread Phytocedrat over your hair and scalp. This is a particularly helpful tip for anyone with long curly hair.

2) Pour out the shampoo into the bottle cap (not your palm). A capful for ladies and guys with shoulder-length to long hair and about half a capful for those with short hair should be sufficient.

3) Dispense the capful of shampoo onto the crown of your head and massage the shampoo into your scalp and hair, moving downwards till you’ve worked up a rich and even lather.

4) Leave the shampoo in your hair for 2-3 minutes for it to work. You can shampoo the rest of your body in the meantime ;)

5) Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and it is best to complete with a cool water rinse. The cool water will close your hair follicles and reduce sebum production.

6) Towel dry your hair, give it a quick comb or brush. It is best to let your hair dry naturally. Try as much as possible to avoid hot hairdryers as the heat can re-open your follicles and encourage sebum production. Heat can also damage your hair, making it dry.

Note: As with all other sebum-regulating shampoos for oily hair, Phytocedrat may cause your hair to feel slight dry. If that’s the case, dispense 4-6 drops of natural oil – I use Argan Oil – but you can also Jojoba or Olive oil onto your palm, rub the oil on your palms and fingers and spread onto the mid-section and ends of your hair after towel drying. Natural oils are readily absorbed by our hair, prevent dryness and nourish and add shine to our hair. Be careful not to use too much oil otherwise your hair will feel oily. 4-6 drops are sufficient. Then let your hair dry naturally.

Repeat the above steps 2-3 times a week. It is not necessary to wash your hair everyday because doing so will strip your scalp of sebum causing your scalp to produce even more sebum to counteract the dryness.

If you follow my guide, you will:

  • Save on shampoo and $$$ – a bottle of Phytocedrat lasts me about 3 months
  • Feel and see a difference within 6 months of using the product
  • Manage the issues of oily roots and dry ends, a problem many people encounter

To help you make an informed choice,

Here’s a Summary of the PROs and CONs of Phytocedrat

The PROs:

  • Removes excess sebum effectively as promised
  • pH balanced for a healthy scalp (click here to learn how to conduct your own pH test on haircare products)
  • Botanical ingredients
  • Suitable for colored hair
  • Hair smells nice after shampooing
  • Scalp and hair are much less oily within 6 months of using the shampoo 3 times a week

The CONs:

  • The runniness of the shampoo seems to be an issue for many users. I never found this to be a problem. Simply follow my guide and dispense the shampoo into the bottle cap so you can control and see exactly how much you are pouring out.
  • Can be a little drying on the hair. Using the shampoo just 3 times a week minimizes this. Applying a small amount of natural oil (Argan, Olive or Jojoba oil) also helps prevent dryness and add shine to your hair.
