Oily Hair and Dandruff

Vitamins and minerals for oily hair

Oily hair and dandruffDandruff is not necessarily accompanied by a dry scalp, since it can also affect people that have an oily hair condition. Dandruff is usually caused by different type of fungus that feeds on excess sebum produced by our scalp skin. Fungus creates flaking, which is actually dead skin particles that are excessively eliminated by the scalp.

Dandruff is actually a very common problem, but it is also a very unpleasant one. Studies have shown that dandruff can affect up to 50% of the population, and it is more frequent in men than women. This happens because there can be hormonal issues behind the excessive oil production. Other related factors include: low immunity, stress and anxiety, allergies to different chemicals in hair care products, an unbalanced diet comprised of processed foods and excess sugars, or genetic predisposition.

Medical studies have determined that the fungus called Malassezia, which is normally present on the scalp, can produce excessive flaking under certain conditions. There are some medicinal shampoos that can eliminate this fungus, but most of the time they offer only temporary relief as the scalp skin gets accustomed to the chemicals. However, in severe dandruff cases accompanied by excessive oiliness, it is advisable to try alternating two or three different medicinal shampoos.

One of the medicinal shampoos should have ketoconazole as a main ingredient, and the other one selenium sulfide. Do not wash your hair more than two times a week, or you will cause more flaking and your hair will become oilier. This is a vicious circle that many oily hair sufferers experience. Washing daily is a solution adopted by many, but unfortunately it only leads to greasier and tarnished hair over time.

For those that would prefer to use a natural treatment against dandruff and oily hair, there are a few plant remedies that you can prepare at home, and that work very well on this kind of problem.

Oily hair and dandruffVine leaves – can treat oily hair and dandruff successfully. Boil two handfuls of fresh or dried vine leaves in 3-4 liters (1 gallon) of water for approximately 2-3 minutes, let the infusion cool down, and then use it to rinse your hair after washing. For best results, follow this procedure for 10 consecutive washes.

Leave them for ten minutes, drain the liquid and once it has cooled off, use it for rinsing your hair after washing. Follow this regimen for at least 10 consecutive washes.

Use the mask on your hair roots, cover your head with a towel, and keep it on for 30 minutes. Then wash your hair with a mild herbal shampoo.

Oily hair and dandruffBirch tree leaves – are a very good remedy for dandruff, oily hair, and also prevent hair loss. Birch tree leaves can have a miraculous effect on your hair. You can buy dried leaves, or you can also use fresh leave if you have a birch tree. Make a plant infusion by boiling the birch tree leaves for 5 minutes in 2 liters (1/2 gallon) of water. Use the infusion to rinse your hair after washing, for at least 10 consecutive washes. If you can’t find birch tree leaves, you can also use a birch tincture to gently massage your hair 2-3 times per week. This will promote hair growth and get rid of dandruff.

Besides using medicinal shampoos and herbal remedies for treating dandruff and oily hair, it is also important to regularly use a shampoo that has a proper pH level. The normal scalp skin pH is around 5 or 6, while most shampoos have a pH level of 8 or 9. This can promote bacteria and fungus to multiply, which causes dandruff and oiliness. Make sure to check the pH level of your shampoo by checking it on the bottle, or by using a pH strip.
